Ionic liquids (ILs) have been used as extracting phases for nanoparticles (NPs) of KNbO3 and BaTiO3 suspended in water. Extraction coefficients range between 70 and 420. The combination of NPs and ILs yield in some cases dramatic toxicity increase. Propidium iodide tests revealed that NPs and ILs lead to a significant increase in the membrane permeability of Vibrio fischeri.
